Google Drive for Linux

Aerie brings Google Drive into your Linux desktop. Browse and search your files, organize your folders, and keep selected folders synchronized—all through a native app that connects directly to Google.

Inside Aerie

Your files, everywhere.

Find what you need.

Browse existing Google Drive files and search by name. Download files to your computer, upload new ones, and create folders without leaving your desktop.

Make room for your work.

Rename files, move them into folders, or send them to the trash. Undo a trash operation when you change your mind. Keyboard shortcuts keep common actions close: Ctrl + K to search, F2 to rename, and Ctrl + M to move.

Keep selected folders in step.

Pair selected Drive folders with a local folder and synchronize edits, renames, and deletions in both directions. Deleted files go to the trash on the other side; when both copies have changed, Aerie keeps both versions.

Let sync work in the background.

A background service can keep selected folders synchronized after the app window closes. The Sync page lets you pause or stop it, so closing a window and stopping synchronization are separate choices.

Your files, your computer

A direct connection to your Drive.

Aerie connects directly from your computer to Google Drive. Your sign-in tokens are stored in your system keyring, and the app’s metadata cache and downloaded files stay on your device. No Aerie-hosted backend receives your Drive data.

Google continues to store your cloud files. Downloads bring a copy to your computer, uploads send files to Google, and enabled sync sends changes between the two.

Aerie initially requests read-only access to browse, search, and download existing files. When you first initiate an operation that needs to change Drive files, it asks for additional permission. Uploads, folder creation, renaming, moving, trashing or restoring, and two-way sync need that access.

Getting started

Begin with your desktop.

Aerie is in early development. The current installation guide covers source builds with Rust 1.92+, GTK 4.20+, libadwaita 1.6+, and Pango 1.56+. There are no published release packages yet.

Account setup currently requires your own Desktop app OAuth client in a Google Cloud project with the Drive API enabled. Save its JSON as ~/.config/aerie/oauth-client.json, then choose Connect Google Drive. Google OAuth verification is being pursued; Aerie is an independent Last Refuge product, not an official Google application.

For sync, choose an empty local folder and select the Drive folders you want to pair with it. The current app supports one Google account. Google-native documents open in your browser rather than syncing as ordinary files.
